Android phones running Android 8.0 or newer. There's no iPhone version, because Apple doesn't allow an app to list and open other apps.

Long-press it and choose the tile it belongs in. Your choice sticks and beats our sorting from then on. Roughly one app in twenty needs a nudge, and more on phones full of apps we haven't seen before.

You can help: in settings, open Tools, backup & support and tap “Email the list to us”. It sends app names and the tile each one landed in, nothing else, and it's how apps we have never seen get sorted correctly for everyone.

Apps we couldn't place confidently. They go to Other rather than disappearing. Move them wherever you like.

Tap the little house at the top of the app. Your wallpaper shows through the tiles, and you can choose how much in settings. To go back, press the house again, or pick your usual home screen in Android's settings under default apps.

Dots are off until you switch them on in settings, and Android then asks you to grant Notification access. Settings shows a status line that says whether the dots are running. If it says Android hasn't started them, switch Notification access off and on again in Android's settings; Android sometimes drops this after an update.

It hides that tile's apps inside Life in 22 Taps behind a Parent PIN, separate from your phone's own PIN. It doesn't stop anyone opening those apps from the normal home screen or app drawer, so it's for tidying, not supervision. For supervising a child's phone, use Google Family Link.

Yes. Switch it off in settings and it disappears from the grid. Offers never appear over other apps and never send notifications.

So it can stay at about a pound, once, with no subscription. The tile is labelled, every paid card inside it is marked AD, and advertisers get no information about you. The app can't send any: it has no internet access.

Through Google Play Family Library. If you're in a Google family group with Family Library switched on, up to five family members can install it from their own Play Store at no extra cost.

In settings, back up to a file and save it somewhere you can reach from the new phone, such as your cloud storage. Install the app on the new phone and restore from that file. The app shows written instructions for both steps.
